Workshops are active. Participants enter a room where tables are covered with beakers, scales, soldering irons, wires, batteries, beams and swinging pendulums. A typical agenda for a 1 day workshop would be similar to the following:
8:30 -9:30 Introduce first project. Participants begin immediately working in teams to solve the problem.
9:30-10:00 Debrief the first math challenge and discuss implications for instruction.
10:00-12:00 Introduce, complete and debrief challenge number two. Participants learn format for communicating complex math solutions.
1:00-2:30 Project number three and discussion of assessment methods.
2:30- 4:30 Participants create their own projects with feedback, for use in their classrooms. Wrap up.
A two day workshop (recommended) allows more time for introducing new tools, expanding grade levels of project types, and more time for participants to create curriculum and to learn how to look at the world around them and "see" math.
